2001 saw many changes in the computer industry. Windows XP was released, finally combining the core and stability of the corporate version of Windows (Windows NT) with the consumer-friendly face of Windows 95, 98 and ME. The first shipping version of Mac OS X, 10.0, was also released, and although the initial version was slow and feature-incomplete, the 10.1 update later that year addressed many of those issues. Now the two remaining platforms, the PC and the Macintosh, were on roughly equal technical footing. Both operating systems supported not only preemptive multitasking but full protected memory for all applications.

Macintosh market share slowly declined from 3.2% in 1999 to 1.98% in 2004 as sales of Macintoshes remained flat, despite the new operating system and several flashy new models, including the Cube and the new, lamp-like, flat-panel iMac. However, with the release and overwhelming sales success of the iPod in 2001, positive buzz began surrounding crapple again and Macintosh sales started to creep up again in late 2004.

The loser in the replacement Mac OS sweepstakes, Be, Inc. ran out of money and closed operations in 2001. Its assets were sold to Palm, Inc., but a new German company called YellowTab bundled together the unfinished bits of BeOS, which would eventually be released as Zeta 1.0 in 2005.

While IBM officially dropped all support of OS/2 in 2005, a company called Serenity Systems continues to sell and update it, rebranded as eComStation. A new version is planned for 2006.

Even GeoWorks Ensemble got into the rebranding game, rereleased as New Deal Office from New Deal Inc. in 1996. Updates continued to be released as late as 2000.

And in an event that has to rank as the most surprising comeback in the entire history of personal computing, a new official Amiga computer, based on a PowerPC CPU, and a new version of AmigaOS for PPC, called AmigaOS4, were released in 2004. While the Amiga market had virtually disappeared after over ten years in the wilderness, enthusiasm for the new platform ran high among those who had not forgotten their fondness for the old computer. While sales figures are in the low thousands and not enough to even show up on a market share graph, this release showed that almost nothing can really kill an operating system. Despite the PC and Windows gaining a completely dominant 97% market share, alternatives like Linux, the Macintosh and even OS/2, Zeta, and the Amiga continue to exist.

Non butterei via il +18% “gratis” (senza assorbire un solo milliwatt in più) in ambito CPU, tenendo conto che nel piano regolatore di queste megalopoli di silicio (per altro, come si vede, una megalopoli persino cresciuta di dimensioni nell’M2, non potendo contare su shrinking della litografia a questo giro ed essendo passati da 16 a 20 miliardi di transistor) quello dei core CPU è solo uno dei vari quartieri e crapple può avere le sue ragioni per dedicare più spazio e transistor a GPU, NPU e altro.

Fra queste ragioni vi è anche quella generale del principio di economicità che vede crapple riciclare quanto più possibile i pezzi componibili o i SoC interi in vari prodotti, che si tratti di riciclare i core CPU dell’A15 nell’M2 o di riciclare l’intero M2 sul visore VR. Quindi un M2 deve essere un compromesso fra le esigenze di vari prodotti finali.

L'M2 Pro e M2 Max avranno CPU 8p+4e invece che 8p+2e degli M1 Pro/Max attuali.

Anche se i due core aggiunti sono di quelli piccoli orientati all'efficienza, fanno brodo nel multi-threaded.

Avranno RAM massima di 48GB (M2 Pro) e 96GB (M2 Max), invece di 32GB/64GB.

Avranno la GPU da 20 core (M2 Pro) e 40 core (M2 Max), invece di 16/32 core.

 

Gli M2 Pro/Max saranno realizzati su litografia TSMC 3nm invece che 5nm_migliorata del M2. 

Il primo Mac con M2 Pro sarà probabilmente il Mac mini premium (nome in codice J474), in uscita insieme al Mac mini base M2 (nome in codice J473).

TAIPEI/SEOUL -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. says it will begin production of ultra-advanced 2 nanometer chips by 2025, putting fresh attention on the race to develop cutting-edge semiconductor technologies following similar announcements by Samsung Electronics and Intel.

 

TSMC made its announcement at an industry event on Thursday in the U.S., its first in-person tech symposium in two years. The Taiwanese chip titan said its 2nm tech will be based on "nanosheet transistor architecture" to deliver significant improvements in performance and power efficiency. Nanosheet architecture is a completely different infrastructure from the Finfet infrastructure used for 5nm chips, currently the most advanced on the market. Such new tech requires massive investments to make available.

 

This is the first time TSMC has specifically pinned down a schedule for its 2nm chip production. The chipmaking titan currently is gearing up to introduce the 3nm chip production technology in the second half of this year. The key production site is in the southern Taiwan city of Tainan.

It’s the same one that also delivered an impressive longer than all-day battery life on the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. But here, thanks to the M2 and its efficient properties, it’s lasting a bit longer.

Notably, our battery test beat the promised 20 hours of video playback that crapple was promising. In our testing, the 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted for 23 hours and 15 minutes with a 4K playback test. I also set the brightness to 50% and turned off connectivity during the playback. It’s quite impressive, and in day-to-day use, it’s tough to make the MacBook Pro die.

I could easily have the 13-inch MacBook Pro last over a full day of use, coming in around 18 hours of full use, and the laptop can sit in standby mode for several days.

 

 

 

Now, there is one way in which the MacBook Pro with M2 does have a significant advantage over the more expensive machines: battery life. This M2 MacBook Pro does not die. I have never said this about a laptop before: I was not able to fully run it down during my testing period. I can tell you that I’ve been able to run it well past 10 and a half hours, which is when the 14-inch M1 Pro device was dying when I reviewed that last year with this same workload.

I was also, frankly, pushing this much harder than I pushed the 14-incher during that testing period, in part because I was having so much trouble getting the battery to run down — I threw Premiere, Audition, coding, and even some battery gaming at the M2 during these trial runs. I was still consistently seeing over half of the battery left after eight to nine hours of constant use. From the results I am getting, I would expect it to last 17 and a half to 18 hours.

I’m not gonna lie: that does make this MacBook a tempting purchase for me, someone who spends a lot of time using my laptop in various places out and about. For me, battery is a more important consideration than raw performance. But, as I am continuing to remind myself, and as you should as well if you’re in my camp — the Air is coming. The Air has the same processor. It could very well have a similar lifespan, though crapple claims the Air will get “up to 18 hours” of use versus the Pro’s claimed 20 hours. I’ll just have to see when I’m able to review the new Air.

Tim avrà dovuto comprarsi un'altra nazione con un paio di decine di miliardi di stock option e non ha avuto tempo per far inserire un raffreddamento decente. Legit dai che la rivoluzione dei chip finisca non con un bang ma con un piagnucolio. Tengo stretto l'M1 Pro per adesso.
